Volunteering at LSPCAwaglogo

Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) was set up in 2008 with the support of the RSPCA and has established itself as Lilongwe’s leading animal care organisations for stray, domestic and farm animals.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to get involved with various branches of the organisation, such as the routine care of shelter animals, community education programmes and the veterinary work at the shelter, in the field and at the veterinary clinic. There is also opportunity to get involved in marketing and fundraising, according to areas of interest/skills.

We are looking for enthusiastic , hardworking volunteers to help with the progression of this much needed organisation. In return we hope to provide a challenging, insightful and rewarding placement during your stay in the “warm heart of Africa”!

PhunziraPhunzira

Phunzira is a UK-based charity that was founded in 2009 in order to help impoverished children and adults in the north of Malawi to receive better education and health care. Our main objective is to provide resources and materials to the people of Ruarwe and its surrounding villages, and to create an approachable and healthy environment that focuses on long-term, sustainable community development. We believe in the notion of collective responsibility and awareness, and seek to initiate grassroots projects that encourage social and economic growth whilst always maintaining a focus on community and individual empowerment.

Ruarwe is a remote village along the lake in an area of incredible natural beauty and it is both a challenging and rewarding place to work. There is no charge for volunteering with Phunzira and we offer reduced price accommodation (for placements over six weeks) at the beautiful Zulunkhuni River Lodge where there are plenty of exotic birds and fish to keep you entertained. There are numerous opportunities for people of all ages and from all walks of life. We are looking for help with education, health, construction work, carpentry, gardening and recreational activities. The overall focus of our project is to create a healthy and happy environment for everyone to learn and develop skills for sustainable living. We are therefore interested in passionate and creative individuals, so please don’t hesitate to contact us even if you feel you don’t have a specific skill set.

Wildlife Action Group – MalawiLSPCA

We are a grassroots NGO co-managing two governmental protected forest reserves in Central Malawi. Our work involves activities to:

  • Stop illegal poaching of African wildlife (elephants, antelopes, monkeys, leopards) and stop deforestation of the forest reserves.
  • Protect and conserve an important biodiversity hotspot in Malawi for animals, birds, insects, plants and trees. The forest reserves where we work are some of the few protected areas where elephant and buffalo still live.
  • Work holistically with local communities to help protect and conserve the forest and wildlife through education, wildlife law enforcement and income generating activities

There is a lot of work involved in managing a Reserve. Wildlife Action Group has been running a volunteer programme since 1994 and we have been very lucky to have fantastic volunteers over the years to assist us. Volunteers participating in the programme all have a common ambition: to see, feel, hear and smell the African bush, to develop a practical knowledge of wildlife and life in the bush and to have a lasting positive impact on the environment.

We are always looking for volunteers to help us with our day to day work as well as new projects that are always in progress. WAG volunteers come from various back grounds such as – animal behaviourist, builders, students, mechanics, agriculture, musicians, flight attendants, office worker – there are no particular criteria.

If you love nature, the great outdoors and hard work, then this is the place for you.

Naturally Africanav-logo-mini

Naturally Africa Volunteers is a UK-based volunteer organisation.  Our registered non-profit organisation in Malawi offers teaching, medical and healthcare, and sports coaching volunteer opportunities in rural villages on the edge of Lake Malawi.

If you can spare 2 weeks of your time or ideally longer and would like to assist with our projects in any of the above areas we would love to hear from you.

As a volunteer with us in Malawi you will experience Malawian culture and life firsthand. Apart from our volunteer cottage, which has stunning views over the lake, there are no other tourists in this area and so you will become very much part of the local community.

Our project activities are diverse, including Home based care, HIV/AIDS support groups, nurseries for vulnerable children, teaching at primary and secondary schools, coaching sports to village teams, and extra-curricular children’s activities, such as art/craft/drama, wildlife and library clubs. We are therefore able to place most volunteers in an area that they can be of value.
